For 35 years Al Bane For Leather has created unique theatrical costumes for the motion picture and music industries. Al Bane has a talent like no other in the leather industry and has done costuming for films including Hateful 8, NCSI, American Satan, and The Hatred.
He has created amazing, unique, and high-quality custom-design leather clothing and accessories for musicians such as Great White, WASP, Warrant, Michael Jackson, Halford, LA Guns, Mandy Lion and WWIII, DC4, Odin, Armored Saint, Beautiful Creatures, Pretty Boy Floyd, Last In Line, and the “Late Great” Jimmy Bain.
In addition, Bane has collaborated on collections for hi-profile clients such as Yves St. Laurent, Rococo USA, Rodarte, and Gia Viviana Dimicova.
Al Bane has taken on some creative projects that aren’t related to motion picture, music, or the clients mentioned above, that include Samsung’s Christmas VR Sleigh Ride at The Grove for Christmas 2016. Bane also designed Lil Sweet’s chaps, saddle, reigns, overcoat and holster for a Diet Dr. Pepper commercial, “The Notebook” for Matthew McConaughey in a Lincoln Town Car commercial, and the spiked ping pong paddle for a Geico commercial.
Al Bane started leatherworking as a hobby in 1979 and the first band he created leather clothing for was WASP. He designed leather pants, vests, shirts, belts, armbands, and guitar straps for their wardrobe.
He opened his first leather shop on Hollywood Boulevard in 1981 and went to school at LA Trade Tech, PCC, and Glendale City College studying fashion, where he ended up recruiting some of the instructors for the production staff at Al Bane for Leather. Around 1985, Bane opened a specialty merchandise booth inside Gazarri’s nightclub on the Sunset Strip where they spent 13 years selling leather items and doing custom leatherwork during The Strip’s prime.
Throughout the mid-nineties to early 2000's Bane honed his craftsmanship, tailoring, sewing, and leatherwork in various forms and functions. He did everything from scuba diving products to boot making. As the 2010's rolled in, he was onsite at Location Ranch Studios, where he had his operations set up and did everything from tents and tarps to customizing wardrobe, and created for productions like Sons of Anarchy, Dirty Projectors, and The Discovery Channel Machines of Glory.
For the past five years he has been at the Al Bane for Leather studio production facility in North Hollywood, CA. where he produces/manufactures theatrical clothing and accessories. He also recently created a retail line of clothing and accessories (leather jackets, vests, dresses, pants, belts, bracelets, purses, hand bags), as well as music instrument accessories (guitar straps, drumstick bags, wireless transmitter holders). For NAMM 2017 Al Bane for Leather partnered with Zemaitis Guitars to unveil a brand new line of custom leather guitar tops and matching guitar straps.
Bane believes in the Pay it Forward system, and administrates a FaceBook Group called “Tips and Tricks with Cobra Class Leather Working Equipment” where he freely discusses the operation, ownership, maintenance, and repair of Cobra sewing machines, which are a line of leather specialty machinery.
